Himalayan salt is rich in healing minerals. It releases negative ions into the air, the same way a flowing river, fresh spring breeze, and thunderstorm does.
What are negative ions, you ask?...
Negative Ions are molecules that have gained an electrical charge. When negative ions are inhaled, they induce our bodies to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical Serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our energy and immune systems. You cannot see, smell, or taste negative ions.
Salt lamps have been tested to see how many negative ions they actually put out. The findings are mixed and, to be totally honest, salt lamps don’t put out that many negative ions. HOWEVER!!!….if you are in a building or dwelling with a lot of electronics, low light, and little natural air flow, just 1 salt lamp can make a positive change. How has Pink Himalayan Salt changed my life?
First, it is said that Himalayan Salt products ease anxiety and skin conditions; relieve congestion and colds; heal sinus infections, bronchitis, and ear infections; relieve insomnia, etc. I have anxiety; frequent congestion and respiratory infections due to all my seasonal, environmental, and food allergies; and I also am an insomniac. I am a prime candidate for salt therapy or “halotherapy” ( Halotherapy, derived from the Greek halos, meaning "salt", is a form of alternative medicine which makes use of salt. Halotherapy. (2017, August 28). Retrieved August 29, 2017, from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halotherapy ).
I keep 1-2 salt lamps in every room of my house. In my bathroom, you will find a bowl of chunks for when I take a bath. In my kitchen, I have a container full of edible pink Himalayan salt.
The first thing I noticed when I began the Himalayan salt journey, was the ambience the salt lamps put off. They possess a warm glow that is impossible to not feel comforted and warmed by. Also, I have avoided coming down with my annual allergy-induced bronchitis/ pneumonia for 2 years now. This is an amazing accomplishment in itself, let me tell you! Bathing with the chunks has greatly reduced joint pain flare-ups. I keep my salt lamps lit day and night. I light the salt candleholders on my altar every few days.
What kinds of things should you know before purchasing Himalayan Salt products?
Salt lamps and salt candleholders all can draw moisture out of the environment. If you live in a high-humidity area, it is best to place your salt products on a raised stand, absorbent coaster, or thick cloth just in case they “sweat”. You don’t want a salty sweat ring on your great-great- grandma’s nightstand. If you keep them lit, the moisture will most likely dry up before it causes any damage to your table. All this being said, I have never had any issues whatsoever with salt rings caused by my lamps or candleholders.
Like in most things, size DOES make a difference! With salt lamps, you want the biggest you can fit into the space, afford, and find. A 4-5 pound salt lamp will purify the air of an 8 foot by 8 foot space, like an office cubicle. Or you can have more than one 4-5 pound lamp in your space, since that seems to be the easiest and most economical size to find.
III. Water is Salts Enemy
Himalayan Salt registers on the MOH’s hardness scale at 2-2.5. Meaning, if water touches this crystal mineral, it will dissolve. So, to keep your salt decor clean, just dust it with a clean, soft cloth.
To conclude this post, in today’s world, where we are spending more time indoors and working in buildings that don’t have a lot of windows or natural sunlight, a salt lamp could greatly benefit your physical and mental health, as well as, the health of anyone sharing the space with you.
